Are people still wearing their fall/winter boots?
I know I'm one of a zillion tourist, but I still want to look fashion-forward %26amp; do have some meetings w/real New Yorkers. I need to look cool %26amp; pulled together, but be comfortable %26amp; prepared for running around the city all day.
NYC Boots in March? Fashion-forward tips?
There are times when a boot is a fashion statement....personally, I love low-heeled boots that look like riding boots, but made in suede rather than the traditional calfskin, and long, all the way up to my knees ...they keep me warm, especially with a pair of nice tights, or narrow pants tucked into them.
Unless a man is in the fashion business, or is a doctor, you usually can't ask a man this sort of question. Men wear trousers and do not feel the breeze when they descend the steps to the subway, for example. When they go around a corner and are suddenly hit by a strong breeze, they do not feel it the way we do. Boots or shoes with thick soles, and a pair of nice slacks are good to protect you from the winter air. I think people sometimes cannot afford to dress all that nicely. Four season dressing is expensive, especially since it involves leisure, business and dress clothes for at least two seasons and the ones tucked in between. Unless your clothes budget is large enough so you can buy sable underwear, you just do your best, is that not so? So, it really does not matter what people are wearing, since they also might be freezing, a situation I hope you can avoid. It is really good to keep yourself warm; you can get bad cramps from your tush being too cold.
Looking cool is a matter of your point of view. One friend of mine who spent a lot of time outdoors taking photographs had found a bootmaker in Soho who made her a pair of red-orange suede boots with a fringe all the way down the sides. She wore them with lined jeans all winter long and the only way we knew it was spring for sure is that one day she wasn't wearing her boots !
Btw, she was very cool !
Fashion-forward: New Yorkers are very fashion-tolerant. So, you just wear what makes you comfortable. I mean, "real" New Yorkers might have embroidered leather boots from a trip to Russia, or maybe found something really nice at a thrift shop. You never can tell. I think it is a matter of finding your own look and staying there, with a few fashionable things new things now and then, to refresh your wardrobe.
{ Personally, for a business meeting, I would only draw the line at galoshes, Wellies, or garden boots }
Reply:Most people in NYC do not really wear fall/winter boots. The main fall/winter boot is a knee-high leather or suede boot in black or brown. But those can really be worn for most of the year, just not in the middle of summer.
If I am wearing a dress to work, I would probably wear a leather or suede boot now.
Do NOT wear Uggs! Under any circumstances.
If you do not know the type of offices you are going to for meetings, it is best to err on the more conservative type of shoe - instead of crazy stilettos! Save those for going out.
A cute peek-toe pump or sling back is always fashionable!
You can also wear a pair of ballet flats for walking around and running between meetings and then carry a nice tote bag/large purse with your heels in them. Besides the comfort issue, the city streets can really do some damage to nice shoes!
Reply:If you are concerned about looking like a "real" ny-er, your boots aren't what you should be worried about. Frankly, nobody in NY gives two craps what you are wearing on your feet. Just walk with a brisk pace, if you are not sure where you are, pull over to the side out of people's way to consult your map, look ahead not up, and go with the flow.
Edit:
If it's a business meeting, why on earth would you wear boots anyway, put on a pair of pumps for god sake.
