Fashionable people please respond -- Boots w/black dress?

Hello, I have purchased a black dress to wear for Valentine's dinner. It's got a halter-ish top and is very small at waist and then flares out. Very lady like and Audrey Hepburn-ish. Question. Would it be a major faux pas to wear very nice black knee boots? Or are heels a must? I ask because it's cold and rainy today. Is this committing a major faux pas? Also, if anyone can post links to dresses like this shown w/boots, please do so. Thanks!

Because of that flare, I would avoid the boots. If it were a very slim dress I think it would fit the look better. It sounds like the kind of dress you'd want to wear with delicate accessories whereas knee-high boots are a bit more clunky. You're not going to do much walking outside, are you? Good luck!
Reply:Something like that is bound to take the elegance away from the dress, but it's your choice. Obviously you do know that heels would be much better, but if you're comfortable with the boots then sure.
Reply:Where your boot to the dinner but change to your heels in the car before you go in. If you are embarrassed that your date will see you flip, just make a joke out of it or explain the situation and show him what a smart girl you are :)
Reply:well the dress sounds really really cute. but i'd have to say that i would NOT wear the boots. For heels i would get some nice closed toe (so it's warmer) black shoes or any other color(maybe pink!) with some of those socks that don't go over the top of your foot but are open at the top if you know what i'm talking about.
Reply:I think wearing black leather boots is a cute idea
Reply:This might come to late...but i hope you did not wear knee boots with a elegant dress like that. Heels are a MUST....
Reply:if they are fashioniable, high heeled, cute boots then yes, if they are like rain boots or something like that, i'd say it's probably not teh best idea fashionable, but if comfort is more important, then go for the boots, who cares!
Reply:Be practical wear the boots then change into the heels.
Reply:the dress sounds so cute that i think heels would go really well. you will have to try the dress on with the boots and the n with the heels and if you have a digital camera take a picture of both and see which one you like best.
